It’s really amazing all the ways you can use propane in your home or at your business. It’s a super versatile and efficient fuel that can be used to power fireplaces, clothes dryers, outdoor grills, space heaters, water heaters, generators, and more. Of course, a propane gas furnace or propane gas boiler can also heat your entire home or business space as well.
Because propane burns hot and clean, propane-powered appliances can reach efficiency ratings well into the 90% range.
When you use propane appliances in your home or business, you’re going to see the savings. Because propane is such an efficient fuel, your energy expenses will go down and you’ll be getting even better value and comfort than you have right now.
With that in mind, here’s a look at some of the propane-powered equipment you can use in and around your Massachusetts or New Hampshire home and business.
Restaurants, hotels, resorts, dry cleaners, greenhouses, farms, wineries, offices and warehouses are among the many businesses that rely on propane to keep their operation moving.
As an example, propane is one of the most economical sources of energy for large warehouses and factories. Plus, because of its low nontoxic emissions, propane is also the fuel of choice for powering indoor forklifts, torches and welders.
Propane is also the best choice for backup generators for businesses since it can be stored indefinitely and will not deteriorate over time like gasoline or thicken in cold weather like diesel. Propane autogas has also made a big impression for forward-thinking businesses who want to reduce their transportation costs while being kinder to the environment with this clean-burning alternative motor fuel.
Other commercial applications for propane include:
The team at Broco Energy® not only provides you with reliable propane delivery, our propane technicians are trained to keep you and your family safe. It’s our number one priority. Our staff is certified by the National Propane Gas Association (NPGA), in cooperation with the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC). Propane has an excellent safety record, and we’re proud to be a part of that.

There are various reasons why you may be looking for a heating oil company. Maybe you’ve just moved into an oil-heated home in the North Reading, MA area. Perhaps you haven’t been satisfied with your current company’s level of service. Or maybe you think you can do better with the price you’re now paying for a gallon of heating oil.
Whatever the reason, there are various factors you will want to consider when choosing a new heating oil company.
First and foremost, you will want to put your trust in a company that offers a secure supply of heating oil that’s backed up by delivery service that’s reliable. Consult with your neighbors to learn about the capabilities of heating companies who deliver to your area and take the time to read customer reviews online too.
If the heating oil company you’re considering also has an in-house service department that can dispatch a heating oil technician when you need an emergency repair or maintenance service, this is an added plus. These types of companies are known as “full-service.”
Broco Energy® is a full-service heating fuel company that has an experienced and dedicated staff of employees who are always ready to help you. They live in nearby towns, and they understand the needs you have, especially during a cold winter. Their knowledge and commitment help us to deliver not only top-quality fuel but quality and value—all backed by years of experience.
As a family-owned and operated company, Broco Energy® remains dedicated to our origins—including the delivery of competitively priced heating oil and reliable 24-hour heating oil equipment and repair services. Here are six things you can always expect from us:
You’ll also want to review any payment and pricing options that a company offers. For instance, at Broco Energy®, while we can’t control global oil prices, we can lower winter fuel payments for customers who enroll in our Budget Program.
We will calculate your monthly payments based on how much fuel you typically use in a year, multiplied by the projected heating fuel prices listed on the commodities exchanges.
Your payments will then be divided into much smaller, easier to manage monthly amounts. You only pay your one monthly bill, even if you get two deliveries in one month.
If you have a growing balance, you never pay any finance charges. Plus, it does not cost anything to enroll in the Budget Program.
Another program customers appreciate is our automatic heating oil delivery service, which does not cost anything extra. Our computer system tracks how much fuel your home will typically use based on how cold it is outside and your fuel usage history. We will deliver fuel automatically to you, usually when your oil tank gets to be one-quarter full. The result: minimal chance of a run-out, no more calling for a delivery and no more checking your fuel levels on your own.
So, instead of having to call us every time you need more heating fuel, you don’t have to do anything. Our driver will simply come to your home and fill your tank based on the schedule we have built for you.
In terms of the fuel itself, we only deliver Bioheat fuel to our heating oil customers. This is a clean alternative to conventional heating oil that also produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions than natural gas.
Bioheat fuel is a blend of biodiesel and traditional petroleum-based heating oil. Biodiesel, which is made from vegetable oils, animal fats and other renewable materials, is considered a biogenic fuel that reduces carbon output 100%. That’s because the combustion of biofuels and other biogenic energy sources actually recycle carbon dioxide emissions through renewable plant materials and other biomass feedstocks.
At Broco Energy®, a veteran-owned business, we take pride in giving back to people who serve the community. We always want to thank those individuals for their dedication, and we proudly offer ongoing discounts to veterans, firefighters, police officers, senior citizens, municipal workers, emergency medical-service workers (EMS) and teachers.
If you live in Middlesex County, MA or one of the many other communities in our service area in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, choose Broco Energy® as your heating oil provider. You’ll rest easy knowing that you’re getting a quality product with quality service for the best possible price. Reach out to us today.
Sometimes, in response to a no-heat service call, our service technician will discover that the heating oil system has shut down because the fuel supply line has been clogged with thick, black sediment known as sludge. This originates from the heating oil tank. Here’s why this happens and how you can prevent it from happening to you.
Sludge in your heating oil tank is a mix of dirt, rust, and oxidized fuel that has settled at the bottom. The fuel is oxidized by bacteria that thrive because of water in the tank, caused by condensation created on the walls of the empty part of your tank.
After water forms on the bare walls on the empty area of the tank, it drips down and sinks to the bottom of the tank because water is denser than heating oil. There, it becomes an ideal environment for bacteria and other microorganisms.
Over time, these organisms turn into sediment. One problem is that this sediment, or sludge, can get into your fuel lines and clog them. This will cause your heating system to shut down.
If you’re a Broco automatic delivery customer, we make sure your tank has enough fuel inside at the end of the heating season so you can avoid any problems with condensation during the warm-weather months. The key to preventing condensation from forming is not to let your tank sit nearly empty during the warm weather.
If you’re not on our automatic delivery schedule, call us to request a fill-up so we can help you head off any condensation problems with your heating oil tank during the spring and summer.
Most Broco Energy® heating fuel customers have chosen to take advantage of our free automatic delivery service. This is a proven method that allows us to manage your fuel supply, freeing you up to manage other important household tasks during the heating season. Here is how it works.
Our computer system tracks how much fuel your home will typically use based on how cold it is outside and your fuel usage history. We will deliver fuel automatically to you, usually when your oil tank gets to be one-quarter full. The result: minimal chance of a run-out, no more calling for a delivery and no more monitoring your fuel levels on your own.
So, instead of having to call us every time you need more heating fuel, you don’t have to do anything! Our driver will simply come to your home and fill your tank based on the schedule we have built for you.
There is no need to schedule and wait for deliveries, and you’ll avoid the expense and hassle of having your system tested and primed for restart—something that is required after a run-out. Please note that automatic delivery does not include burner service, additives or treatments.
However, when you’re a Broco Energy® automatic delivery customer, your price per gallon is better, and you won’t see any extra charges. You’ll be billed automatically too, on your credit card, using a debit card or by ACH.
If your fuel needs are not that constant, or if you prefer to manage your heating-oil (or propane) orders directly, then we recommend staying on will-call. For will-call deliveries, you place your order over the phone or online and we’ll deliver to you the next time we’re in your area. Please note that will-call deliveries start at a minimum of 100 gallons.
If you live or have a business in Middlesex County, MA or one of the many other communities in our service area in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, please reach out to us if you would like to become a Broco Energy® commercial or residential fuel customer.
We’ll make sure that your heating oil tank is properly inspected and maintained. If you need a replacement heating oil tank, we offer you a wide selection of replacement tanks and the knowledge to install them correctly and efficiently. Our installers are also experienced in the best ways to transfer your existing heating fuel and dispose of the old tank.
It’s been seven years since the formation of Broco Energy®’s Priority 1 emergency-response team, and with another Atlantic Hurricane Season coming up on the horizon, we are well-prepared to go wherever help is needed in 2024.
Broco Energy® is certified for emergency response–including emergency fuel delivery–by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as well as the Coast Guard. We are also contracted as the emergency fuel provider for the Massachusetts Energy Marketers Association (MEMA).
Taking advantage of partnerships that we have set up throughout the country, our Priority 1 emergency-response team can be found on the scene wherever we’re needed, providing immediate emergency fuel deliveries until the trucks we’ve deployed arrive on site.
Qualified to respond to all levels of emergencies, our team is made up of experienced fuel-truck drivers and fuel-logistics coordinators. We can handle extreme weather events and other high-pressure situations, offering critical fuel support when it’s needed most.
Disaster relief means more than just oil trucks and supplies. Our response includes workforce and logistics coordinators who will send oil tanks, do remote monitoring, and schedule emergency fuel service and deliveries as needed throughout the duration of the incident.
In 2017, Broco Energy® was activated to provide relief efforts for FEMA in Florida during Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. That was the beginning of our national Priority 1 emergency-response team.
We left Boston with six oil tank trucks loaded with diesel and gasoline to provide fuel for priority facilities on a 24-hour basis. We stationed our trucks at local hospitals for generator refueling and at appointed fueling points to help the Urban Search & Rescue Task Force.
The following year, the Broco Energy® team left the Carolinas, where we had been helping with the recovery efforts from Hurricane Florence, to respond to an urgent call from back home. We were asked to provide generators, which supplied heat to thousands of residents left without natural gas service due to multiple explosions in the Merrimack Valley.
We started with a small response by teaming up with fire departments on the scene, and then, once the incident was stabilized, we handled fixing the gas main.
The operation lasted from September into the winter. Broco Energy® provided fuel service to more than 500 generators 24 hours a day for over three months, until new natural gas pipelines and equipment could be installed.
In 2019, we dispatched a fleet of trucks to Georgia, South Carolina and Florida in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian.
In 2020, we responded to multiple natural disasters in Louisiana. First, to help with the recovery from the damage caused by Hurricane Laura in Louisiana, we sent a fleet of 12 trucks and several hundred generators.
Soon after, Hurricane Sally caused extensive damage to the growing city of Lake Charles, LA, where we responded with 400 generators. At the same time, we continued to aid with the response to Hurricane Laura for more than two months. While there, we provided critical infrastructure for city services such as utility companies, hospitals, and waste-water treatment plants.
In 2021, we provided generators to hospitals and utility companies in the New Orleans area during the recovery from Hurricane Ida. We also fueled the pumping stations that controlled the levees to prevent catastrophic flooding.
Finally, two years ago, we aided after the devastating Category 4 Hurricane Ian caused extensive damage in the Fort Meyers, FL area. We worked to restore power with local and national utility companies while also providing generators throughout the region.
As we move ahead in 2024, the Priority 1 emergency-response team at Broco Energy® stays ready to respond to and help any community in the country hit by power outages after disasters with emergency fueling and Priority 1 delivery service–every day of the year.
Emergency situations call for swift, organized response, with no hesitation and no room for no mistakes. For areas affected by hurricanes, ice storms, floods, natural disasters or power outages, our professional, expert team is on the scene with the emergency fueling that’s necessary to get the job done.
If you live or have a business in Essex County, MA or one of the many other communities in our service area in Massachusetts and New Hampshire, please reach out to us if you would like to become a Broco Energy® commercial or residential fuel customer.

Broco Energy® has the experience, expertise and resources to meet the commercial fuel needs of a diverse base of businesses in New England. Among our commercial fuel products is ultra-low-sulfur (ULS) diesel fuel, both on-road and off-road. Let’s take a closer look at this product.
Diesel fuel is a distillate fuel oil that’s primarily derived from crude oil. It’s a vital fuel for freight trucks, buses, boats, trains and a range of off-road vehicles and equipment.
There is very little difference between on-road and off-road diesel besides how they look and how they are sold and taxed.
On-road diesel is not dyed. You can purchase it at gas stations from a pump, and it is subject to taxes and fees.
Off-road diesel is dyed red and, as the name suggests, cannot be used for road vehicles. It’s used in power generation, space heating, forklifts, farm equipment, and much more. Off-road diesel is often much less expensive since it isn’t subject to the same taxes. However, you cannot buy it at the pump.
While diesel and gasoline are both derived from crude oil, diesel is a denser refined product. It won’t evaporate in the air like gasoline, and it has a much longer shelf life.
Gasoline and diesel engines work differently too. While they are both internal combustion engines, diesel engines must apply pressure and heat to fuel for combustion, while gasoline-powered engines only need air and a spark. That’s because gasoline is flammable, and diesel isn’t. Diesel combustion produces 10-20% more energy than gasoline combustion.
Although on-road diesel and off-road diesel are the two primary designations, there are other kinds of fuel that fall into the category of diesel. This includes:
Home heating oil and red-dyed off-road diesel are effectively the same product. However, much of the heating oil used in homes in the Northeast today also contains biodiesel, which is known as Bioheat® fuel.
Biodiesel is the first and only EPA-designated advanced biofuel in commercial-scale production across the country and can be used in existing diesel engines without modification.
Biodiesel and conventional diesel vehicles are the same. Although light-, medium- and heavy-duty diesel vehicles are not technically alternative fuel vehicles, almost all these vehicles are capable of running on biodiesel blends.
Biodiesel raises the fuel’s cetane number and improves fuel lubricity. A higher cetane number means the engine is easier to start and reduces ignition delay. Diesel engines depend on the lubricity of the fuel to prevent moving parts from wearing out prematurely. Improved lubricity reduces friction within the moving parts, avoiding additional wear. A primary advantage of biodiesel is that it can improve the lubricity of the fuel at blend levels as low as 1%.
At Broco Energy®, we stand by our commitment to providing commercial operations with the fuel they need, no matter what.
We respond to commercial fuel needs promptly and professionally. Our team has the equipment necessary to get the job done, and we’re ready to establish the most cost-effective way for you to purchase your fuel.
If you live in Haverhill, MA or one of the many other communities in our service area, please reach out to us if you would like to become a Broco Energy® commercial fuel customer.
Another great way you get peace of mind with Broco Energy® as your propane supplier is that the fuel we put in your tank doesn’t have a shelf life or an expiration date. In other words, propane doesn’t degrade as other fuels do, such as gasoline, kerosene, diesel and heating oil. So, as long as your propane tank is properly maintained, the propane that sits inside will be perfectly fine, and its potency and efficiency will not be affected even if it rests in storage for a long time.
That’s just one more reason why propane represents an extremely smart choice as a fuel source for all types of home appliances and other equipment in your home. This includes water heaters, furnaces, boilers, space heaters, fireplaces, and whole-house generators.
Another issue you don’t need to worry about is your propane supply freezing inside the tank. Propane’s freezing point is about -306°F. This temperature could only be produced in a laboratory setting because this freezing point is too cold to happen anywhere on Earth—including the South Pole.
However, we should note that propane does have a boiling point of about -44°F. What does this mean? Well, at this temperature, liquid propane can no longer turn into a gas. Now it is possible, if rare, to reach that temperature, but it would be very rare. For trivia buffs, the coldest recorded temperature in Massachusetts was -40°F in January 1984.
The main concern during extremely cold winters is not propane freezing, but a loss of pressure in your tank.
Like all liquids, propane contracts in the cold. When it does, the volume of liquid propane in your tank shrinks, resulting in a loss of pressure. If the pressure gets too low, propane won’t be able to reach your gas burners.
To avoid low pressure problems during cold weather extremes, follow these tips:
The propane experts at Broco Energy® are trained to keep you and your family safe. It’s our number one priority. Our staff is certified by the National Propane Gas Association (NPGA), in cooperation with the Propane Education & Research Council (PERC). Propane has an excellent safety record, and we’re proud to be a part of that.
Propane is an ideal fuel for many purposes, even beyond your water heater and heating your home with your furnace or boiler. It’s also useful for stoves, clothes dryers and fireplaces as well as for outdoor use, including pool heating and exterior lighting. And peace of mind is never far off when you have a propane-fueled generator to get you through power outages.
If you live in Wakefield, MA or one of the many other communities in our service area, please reach out to us if you would like to become a Broco Energy® propane customer.
Even though so much has improved with today’s heating oil, something important has remained the same. People in North Reading, MA and elsewhere in our service area always know that no matter how cold it gets, they can always rely on heating oil to keep them comfortable.
Frosty temperatures always reinforce the value of owning an oil-heated home. That’s because heating oil generates nearly 140,000 Btu’s of heat for every gallon burned and warms a home evenly and efficiently.
What’s the secret? The flame in a heating oil system burns hundreds of degrees hotter than in other energy systems, which helps keep oil-heated homes toasty warm during our New England winters.
Of course, homeowners who take advantage of the latest heating oil technology, such as high-efficiency heating oil boilers and heating oil furnaces, increase their odds of having the warmest, most comfortable home in their neighborhood.
Heating oil is a remarkably safe home heating fuel. First, heating oil cannot explode. The fuel that sits in your tank is as likely to explode as the water in your backyard swimming pool. It’s that safe.
Plus, with a heating oil tank on your property, you can always count on having a secure, on-site supply. Heating oil is carefully transported and expertly handled by highly trained professionals, who use equipment and techniques that keep safety at the forefront.
Additionally, a heating oil system poses a very low risk of carbon monoxide poisoning. If an oil burner malfunctions (most often due to a lack of maintenance), the safety devices in the unit will typically shut the heating oil furnace or heating oil boiler off.
Broco Energy® delivers Bioheat fuel to our heating oil customers and it is an absolute game-changer when it comes to heating your home, saving you money, and helping the environment.
Bioheat fuel is a blend of ultra-low sulfur heating oil combined with premium biofuels made from renewable resources such as animal fats, recycled restaurant cooking oils, algae, and plant oils such as soybeans and sunflower.
Because it is cleaner burning, generating fewer greenhouse gas emissions than conventional heating oil, Bioheat fuel helps to increase system efficiency, which reduces your home heating expenses while keeping your home comfortable.
Because it is clean burning, Bioheat fuel leaves fewer deposits on your system’s internal parts. That helps to reduce wear and tear, meaning you will likely have fewer breakdowns and a longer life expectancy for your heating oil boiler or heating oil furnace compared to running it with traditional heating oil. You don’t have to add anything to or modify your boiler or furnace in any way to use Bioheat fuel.
You may be able to enjoy all of Bioheat fuel’s benefits right now with your next heating oil delivery when you become a Broco Energy® customer.
Many of our heating oil customers have enrolled in our FREE automatic delivery program. This allows us to stay on top of your fuel needs and be in touch when it’s time to schedule a Bioheat fuel delivery long before your tank gets too low. We find that this is a tried-and-true method of minimizing the risk of a run-out. You’ll never have to think about how much fuel is in your tank. You will also get a better price-per-gallon from us.
The Broco Energy® team of expert licensed heating oil service technicians and heating oil delivery drivers serve the Reading and North Reading area, along with surrounding communities in Massachusetts and up to New Hampshire.

Learn more about how Broco Energy® can make a difference in serving your fuel needs. Contact us today.
When Bob Brown and his wife, Angela, started Broco Energy® in 2007, they were committed to being different: they wanted to be an energy company that would provide lower carbon fuel solutions in the New England area. They knew that heating oil was a reliable home heating source. But they wanted it to be better. And their customers did, too.
“A lot of people in this region really support renewable fuels and they want to use a lower carbon fuel, but they don’t want to go through the extra expense of upgrading their equipment to accommodate it,” Bob Brown says. “We needed to find the right partner to roll out a blending process that would work for all of us. We already knew Bioheat® fuel represented the best solution for a lower carbon fuel.”
That’s when Broco Energy® started looking for potential partners with good reputations in the industry. Their search led to Chevron Renewable Energy Group, a top biodiesel producer in both the U.S. and abroad.
In 2017, Broco Energy® purchased a rail terminal in Massachusetts and two years later, as part of their newly formed partnership with the Chevron Renewable Energy Group, opened the first biodiesel terminal in New England.
“Chevron Renewable Energy Group’s biodiesel is by far the most superior I’ve ever seen,” Brown says. “Their distillation process is the best out there. It allows us to show that we’re selling a premium-branded biodiesel. Because not all biodiesel is created equally.”
Like petroleum diesel, biodiesel is used to fuel compression-ignition engines. Biodiesel is manufactured domestically from vegetable oils, animal fats, or recycled restaurant cooking oil. Read more about biodiesel.
Broco Energy® is so committed to doing its part in the industry-wide initiative to reach lower carbon emission targets by 2050 that the company switched 10 of their trucks to run strictly on biodiesel, utilizing Optimus Technologies Vector System.
Brown says his mechanics report better fuel mileage and the drivers observe that the trucks have less regeneration cycles as a result.
“It just smells cleaner too,” says John Pearson, a Broco Energy® driver. “I’ve seen other biodiesel products and Chevron Renewable Energy Group’s is just a high-quality product. You can literally see through it. Others are just inferior.”
Brown says he plans to implement biodiesel into the full fleet as well, because it’s important that Broco Energy® leads by example.
“We can’t be selling a product and not use it ourselves,” he says. “We are embracing this.”
When Broco Energy® first introduced Bioheat® fuel–– a blend of low-sulfur heating oil and renewable biodiesel–– residential customers were concerned mostly about two things: the quality of the product and whether their heating system would require expensive modifications or upgrades. A little education – and helpful service technicians who assured customers that their systems were actually better off using Bioheat® fuel – made for a seamless transition.
“Our techs who work on the oil burners really appreciate the fuel because it’s a lower carbon burn and leaves the heat exchangers almost carbon-free,” Brown says. “When you have an existing oil burner that can now burn a biodiesel blend at absolutely zero cost to the customer for a retrofit, that’s a win-win. They’re getting more life out of their systems just by using cleaner fuel, they’re saving money and they’re doing their part by embracing renewable fuels.”
With a solid partnership in place with Chevron Renewable Energy Group, Brown says he now looks forward to new legislation that will help incentivize companies to use biodiesel so it becomes standard nationwide.
A local fire captain and U.S. Navy Seabee veteran, Brown says he also appreciates that Chevron Renewable Energy Group offers a superior home-grown product that’s truly scalable to reduce carbon emissions.
At Broco Energy®, we take pride in giving back to people who serve the community. We always want to thank those individuals for their dedication, and we proudly offer ongoing discounts to veterans, firefighters, police officers, senior citizens, municipal workers, emergency medical-service workers (EMS) and teachers.
