Sometimes, in response to a no-heat service call, our service technician will discover that the heating oil system has shut down because the fuel supply line has been clogged with thick, black sediment known as sludge. This originates from the heating oil tank. Here’s why this happens and how you can prevent it from happening to you.
Sludge in your heating oil tank is a mix of dirt, rust, and oxidized fuel that has settled at the bottom. The fuel is oxidized by bacteria that thrive because of water in the tank, caused by condensation created on the walls of the empty part of your tank.
After water forms on the bare walls on the empty area of the tank, it drips down and sinks to the bottom of the tank because water is denser than heating oil. There, it becomes an ideal environment for bacteria and other microorganisms.
Over time, these organisms turn into sediment. One problem is that this sediment, or sludge, can get into your fuel lines and clog them. This will cause your heating system to shut down.
If you’re a Broco automatic delivery customer, we make sure your tank has enough fuel inside at the end of the heating season so you can avoid any problems with condensation during the warm-weather months. The key to preventing condensation from forming is not to let your tank sit nearly empty during the warm weather.

Disaster relief means more than just oil trucks and supplies. Our response includes workforce and logistics coordinators who will send oil tanks, do remote monitoring, and schedule emergency fuel service and deliveries as needed throughout the duration of the incident.
In 2017, Broco Energy® was activated to provide relief efforts for FEMA in Florida during Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. That was the beginning of our national Priority 1 emergency-response team.
We left Boston with six oil tank trucks loaded with diesel and gasoline to provide fuel for priority facilities on a 24-hour basis. We stationed our trucks at local hospitals for generator refueling and at appointed fueling points to help the Urban Search & Rescue Task Force.
The following year, the Broco Energy® team left the Carolinas, where we had been helping with the recovery efforts from Hurricane Florence, to respond to an urgent call from back home. We were asked to provide generators, which supplied heat to thousands of residents left without natural gas service due to multiple explosions in the Merrimack Valley.
We started with a small response by teaming up with fire departments on the scene, and then, once the incident was stabilized, we handled fixing the gas main.
The operation lasted from September into the winter. Broco Energy® provided fuel service to more than 500 generators 24 hours a day for over three months, until new natural gas pipelines and equipment could be installed.
In 2019, we dispatched a fleet of trucks to Georgia, South Carolina and Florida in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian.
In 2020, we responded to multiple natural disasters in Louisiana. First, to help with the recovery from the damage caused by Hurricane Laura in Louisiana, we sent a fleet of 12 trucks and several hundred generators.
Soon after, Hurricane Sally caused extensive damage to the growing city of Lake Charles, LA, where we responded with 400 generators. At the same time, we continued to aid with the response to Hurricane Laura for more than two months. While there, we provided critical infrastructure for city services such as utility companies, hospitals, and waste-water treatment plants.
In 2021, we provided generators to hospitals and utility companies in the New Orleans area during the recovery from Hurricane Ida. We also fueled the pumping stations that controlled the levees to prevent catastrophic flooding.
Finally, two years ago, we aided after the devastating Category 4 Hurricane Ian caused extensive damage in the Fort Meyers, FL area. We worked to restore power with local and national utility companies while also providing generators throughout the region.
As we move ahead in 2024, the Priority 1 emergency-response team at Broco Energy® stays ready to respond to and help any community in the country hit by power outages after disasters with emergency fueling and Priority 1 delivery service–every day of the year.

Diesel fuel is a distillate fuel oil that’s primarily derived from crude oil. It’s a vital fuel for freight trucks, buses, boats, trains and a range of off-road vehicles and equipment.
There is very little difference between on-road and off-road diesel besides how they look and how they are sold and taxed.
On-road diesel is not dyed. You can purchase it at gas stations from a pump, and it is subject to taxes and fees.
Off-road diesel is dyed red and, as the name suggests, cannot be used for road vehicles. It’s used in power generation, space heating, forklifts, farm equipment, and much more. Off-road diesel is often much less expensive since it isn’t subject to the same taxes. However, you cannot buy it at the pump.
While diesel and gasoline are both derived from crude oil, diesel is a denser refined product. It won’t evaporate in the air like gasoline, and it has a much longer shelf life.
Gasoline and diesel engines work differently too. While they are both internal combustion engines, diesel engines must apply pressure and heat to fuel for combustion, while gasoline-powered engines only need air and a spark. That’s because gasoline is flammable, and diesel isn’t. Diesel combustion produces 10-20% more energy than gasoline combustion.
Although on-road diesel and off-road diesel are the two primary designations, there are other kinds of fuel that fall into the category of diesel. This includes:
Home heating oil and red-dyed off-road diesel are effectively the same product. However, much of the heating oil used in homes in the Northeast today also contains biodiesel, which is known as Bioheat® fuel.
Biodiesel is the first and only EPA-designated advanced biofuel in commercial-scale production across the country and can be used in existing diesel engines without modification.
Biodiesel and conventional diesel vehicles are the same. Although light-, medium- and heavy-duty diesel vehicles are not technically alternative fuel vehicles, almost all these vehicles are capable of running on biodiesel blends.
Biodiesel raises the fuel’s cetane number and improves fuel lubricity. A higher cetane number means the engine is easier to start and reduces ignition delay. Diesel engines depend on the lubricity of the fuel to prevent moving parts from wearing out prematurely. Improved lubricity reduces friction within the moving parts, avoiding additional wear. A primary advantage of biodiesel is that it can improve the lubricity of the fuel at blend levels as low as 1%.

Another great way you get peace of mind with Broco Energy® as your propane supplier is that the fuel we put in your tank doesn’t have a shelf life or an expiration date. In other words, propane doesn’t degrade as other fuels do, such as gasoline, kerosene, diesel and heating oil. So, as long as your propane tank is properly maintained, the propane that sits inside will be perfectly fine, and its potency and efficiency will not be affected even if it rests in storage for a long time.
That’s just one more reason why propane represents an extremely smart choice as a fuel source for all types of home appliances and other equipment in your home. This includes water heaters, furnaces, boilers, space heaters, fireplaces, and whole-house generators.
Another issue you don’t need to worry about is your propane supply freezing inside the tank. Propane’s freezing point is about -306°F. This temperature could only be produced in a laboratory setting because this freezing point is too cold to happen anywhere on Earth—including the South Pole.
However, we should note that propane does have a boiling point of about -44°F. What does this mean? Well, at this temperature, liquid propane can no longer turn into a gas. Now it is possible, if rare, to reach that temperature, but it would be very rare. For trivia buffs, the coldest recorded temperature in Massachusetts was -40°F in January 1984.
The main concern during extremely cold winters is not propane freezing, but a loss of pressure in your tank.
Like all liquids, propane contracts in the cold. When it does, the volume of liquid propane in your tank shrinks, resulting in a loss of pressure. If the pressure gets too low, propane won’t be able to reach your gas burners.

When Bob Brown and his wife, Angela, started Broco Energy® in 2007, they were committed to being different: they wanted to be an energy company that would provide lower carbon fuel solutions in the New England area. In 2017, Broco Energy® purchased a rail terminal in Massachusetts and two years later, as part of their newly formed partnership with the Chevron Renewable Energy Group, opened the first biodiesel terminal in New England.
“Chevron Renewable Energy Group’s biodiesel is by far the most superior I’ve ever seen,” Brown says. “Their distillation process is the best out there. It allows us to show that we’re selling a premium-branded biodiesel. Because not all biodiesel is created equally.”
Like petroleum diesel, biodiesel is used to fuel compression-ignition engines. Biodiesel is manufactured domestically from vegetable oils, animal fats, or recycled restaurant cooking oil. Read more about biodiesel.
Broco Energy® is so committed to doing its part in the industry-wide initiative to reach lower carbon emission targets by 2050 that the company switched 10 of their trucks to run strictly on biodiesel, utilizing Optimus Technologies Vector System.
Brown says his mechanics report better fuel mileage and the drivers observe that the trucks have less regeneration cycles as a result.
“It just smells cleaner too,” says John Pearson, a Broco Energy® driver. “I’ve seen other biodiesel products and Chevron Renewable Energy Group’s is just a high-quality product. You can literally see through it. Others are just inferior.”
Brown says he plans to implement biodiesel into the full fleet as well, because it’s important that Broco Energy® leads by example.
“We can’t be selling a product and not use it ourselves,” he says. “We are embracing this.”
When Broco Energy® first introduced Bioheat® fuel–– a blend of low-sulfur heating oil and renewable biodiesel–– residential customers were concerned mostly about two things: the quality of the product and whether their heating system would require expensive modifications or upgrades. A little education – and helpful service technicians who assured customers that their systems were actually better off using Bioheat® fuel – made for a seamless transition.
“Our techs who work on the oil burners really appreciate the fuel because it’s a lower carbon burn and leaves the heat exchangers almost carbon-free,” Brown says. “When you have an existing oil burner that can now burn a biodiesel blend at absolutely zero cost to the customer for a retrofit, that’s a win-win. They’re getting more life out of their systems just by using cleaner fuel, they’re saving money and they’re doing their part by embracing renewable fuels.”
With a solid partnership in place with Chevron Renewable Energy Group, Brown says he now looks forward to new legislation that will help incentivize companies to use biodiesel so it becomes standard nationwide.
