The Benefits of a Greener Fuel for Your Home

biofuel home heat massachusettsMassachusetts is leading the way on the evolution toward a green, renewable fuel oil—and Broco Energy® is proud to be doing our part with deliveries of Bioheat® fuel.

We only deliver Bioheat fuel to our heating oil customers. This is a clean alternative to conventional heating oil that also produces fewer greenhouse gas emissions than natural gas.

Bioheat fuel is a blend of biodiesel and traditional petroleum-based heating oil. Biodiesel, which is made from vegetable oils, animal fats and other renewable materials, is considered a biogenic fuel that reduces carbon output 100%. That’s because the combustion of biofuels and other biogenic energy sources actually recycle carbon dioxide emissions through renewable plant materials and other biomass feedstocks. That’s why you’ll be hearing a lot about net-zero carbon emissions in the years ahead.

Bioheat Fuel and the Future

As efforts to reduce fossil fuel use and greenhouse gas emissions remain a top priority in the heating oil industry, more people are gaining an understanding of what it all means—and the great importance of this progress.

That’s why leaders in the heating oil industry have passed a resolution that outlines what the industry’s progress needs to look like over the next few decades.

Bioheat fuel requires no modifications to your system, no big expenditure on new equipment and reduces your carbon footprint. Plus, efficient and clean-burning Bioheat fuel saves you money on fuel and equipment service.

Bioheat fuel is also covered under most manufacturers’ heating system warranties. The American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM) International has approved Bioheat’s performance standards.

Bioheat Fuel Blends

The heating-oil industry uses the amount of biodiesel per gallon to name the specific Bioheat fuel blend being used. For example, B5 is a blend containing 5% biodiesel, and B20 contains 20%. Broco Energy® proudly offers blends of up to B100!

More about What Is Bioheat® Fuel?

How You Can Help Our Drivers Stay on Schedule

fuel delivery massachusettsBroco Energy® drivers pride themselves on making timely heating oil and propane deliveries even during tough weather conditions.

While our team works hard to provide the most reliable heating fuel delivery in the area, they can always use a helping hand.

What You Can Do to Help

Ice and snow can turn an already tough job into a potentially hazardous one. Maneuvering with a heavy hose while navigating slippery surfaces can be challenging—sometimes our drivers lose their footing and sustain injuries. You can help our drivers stay safe by keeping the path to your oil or propane tank clear and removing any nearby obstacles such as fallen branches.

We also need you to shovel or plow your driveway and keep it free of ice. Safety codes prohibit us from parking our delivery truck on an incline unless it is perfectly dry and wheel chocks can be applied safely. Keep this in mind: just because you can get your car down your driveway doesn’t mean our heavy fuel truck can make it too.

Obviously, our fuel trucks are much wider than your car. That’s why we need a 9-foot to 10-foot-wide clear path in your driveway to allow enough room to maneuver. It also helps if you mark the borders of your driveway when the snow has covered them.

Preventing Run-outs

Most of our heating oil and propane customers take advantage of our free automatic delivery service. This is a proven method that allows us to manage your fuel supply.

Our computer system tracks how much fuel your home will typically use based on how cold it is outside and your fuel usage history. We will deliver fuel automatically to you, usually when your oil tank gets to be one-quarter full (or 30% for propane tanks). The result: minimal chance of a run-out, no more calling for a delivery and no more monitoring your fuel levels on your own.

So, instead of having to call us every time you need more oil or propane, you don’t have to do anything! Our driver will simply come to your home and fill your tank based on the schedule we have built for you.

There is no need to schedule and wait for deliveries, and you’ll avoid the expense and hassle of having your system tested and primed for restart—something that is required after a run-out. Please note that automatic delivery does not include burner service, additives or treatments.

However, when you’re a Broco Energy® automatic delivery customer, your price per gallon is better, and you won’t see any extra charges. You’ll be billed automatically too, on your credit card, using a debit card or by ACH. It can’t get any easier than that!

More about Are You Prepared for a Heating Fuel Delivery?

Propane Usage Varies Widely

how much propane massachusettsA lot of factors go into determining your daily propane usage. If you want to estimate and manage your propane expenses, keep in mind that your propane usage might vary widely based on how you utilize gas in your home, the time of year, the number of propane appliances you have, their age and condition, and more.

Broco Energy®F helps customers manage their propane costs with our Budget Program.  Available for our automatic-delivery customers, the Budget Program begins in late summer.

We calculate your usage based on the prior year. Then we charge you a predetermined, monthly amount—automatically billed using a credit card, a debit card or ACH. Payments are posted on the 15th of each month, using a 12-month cycle. Feel free to contact us with questions.

Calculate Your Propane Usage

The estimates below should give you some idea of how much each propane appliance typically uses to do its job. Please note that these appliance measurements are expressed as BTU per hour. This is a way to represent a measurement of deliverable power applicable to each propane gas appliance. (Think of it like the horsepower rating of a car). As an example, a typical furnace is about 100,000 BTU per hour. You can go here to read more about BTU per hour.

More about How Automatic Delivery Prevents Run-outs

Limit the Damage Caused by Hurricanes and Blizzards

business winterizing massachusettsAny business in Massachusetts, along with the rest of the Northeast, understands the importance of preparing for severe storms like hurricanes and blizzards during the fall and winter seasons. Most of us have a lot of experience going toe-to-toe with Mother Nature. We’ve seen everything from ice storms, flash floods, moderate snowstorms that last only a few hours to blinding blizzards that can shut everything down for days.

Here are five reminders to help you to be ready for the worst.

Winterize Your Office Building

It’s always a good idea to get a professional to check your building for anything that can let warm air out and cold air in. Caulking or weatherstripping any cracks or gaps around your building can reduce your heating costs and prevent any storm water from seeping into your building and causing damage.

Confirm Contractor Agreements for Snow and Ice Removal

This is the time to confirm that you have “all your ducks in a row” as far as having a reliable contractor ready to go to remove snow from your property. Obviously, you want snow clearance as soon as possible so your customers (and employees) aren’t impeded from entering your building. And, of course, the last thing your business needs is a liability claim if someone takes a fall and gets injured.

Communicate with Employees and Customers

Stay on top of weather forecasts and make a decision about closing your business or delaying its opening before the storm hits whenever possible. And then let your employees know as soon as possible through a group text, email, etc. At all costs, you want to avoid having your employees trying to navigate unsafe roads. You can also use social media, like your Facebook page, to keep your customers up-to-date about your business hours or potential closures.

Check Safety Devices

Check all of your building’s smoke detectors, carbon monoxide detectors and if applicable, propane gas detectors, to confirm they are all functioning properly.

Invest in a Generator

Get a commercial generator installed on site so your business can keep vital equipment running during a power outage. Broco Energy® offers both routine and emergency generator-fuel services. We’ll keep your generator fueled so that you never have to worry about backup power for your facility.

Broco Energy®’s Priority 1 Team Is Always On-Call!

A Vital Cog in the Propane Supply Chain

transporting propane by train massachusettsOver the past five years, propane suppliers and retailers have focused on increasing storage capacity through the addition of rail terminals. This allows local propane companies convenient access to reliable supply.

In this age of mind-boggling technology, it’s interesting that transporting propane by “old-fashioned” rail remains a vital cog in the propane supply chain. But that’s especially true when the end-users are not located close to a propane pipeline.

The presence of rail-supplied terminals help stabilize prices for local and regional propane providers since this is more cost-efficient than using trucks to haul propane over long distances to reach rural areas, where the agricultural industry is highly dependent on a steady stream of propane supply.*

Broco Energy® and Our Use of Transloading

Cost-effective and environmentally friendly, transloading—transferring product from rail to either storage or truck—remains an ideal method for obtaining wholesale pricing for all intermodal products.

Broco Energy® is an industrial leader in New England—particularly in Boston and southern New Hampshire, with two transload terminals in Northern Boston, including a rail-served 500,000-gallon storage facility with 45 railcar tracks that can transload not only fuel but steel, lumber and stone.

Broco Energy® and A&B Crossing team up to specialize in safely handling a diverse range of chemicals, resins, fuels, food-grade products and industrial commodities.

Broco Energy®’s experienced drivers safely deliver each load with worry-free consistency. Our modern fleet minimizes environmental impact and ensures reliable service. With a broad range of specialized equipment, we provide transportation solutions to meet your business needs.

Ancillary and Technical Services

Broco Energy® offers warehousing and laydown areas for dry goods storage, in addition to many other services at our terminals. You can turn to Broco Energy® for railcar heating, sparging, blending and diluting, railcar storage, sampling and ground storage, as well as filters and packaging.

Our team of industry experts and engineers design and operate handling-and-processing systems that create value for your business and solve your unique challenges.

Safety Is Always Our Priority

The Broco Energy® team has been trained to handle materials safely and securely, while keeping goods moving for your business purposes. Let us know what you need and we will provide you with the trucking services, professional team and equipment necessary to get the job done.

No matter where you are or when you need us, Broco Energy® stands ready to serve all of your transloading needs. Contact us or call us today to learn more.

Broco Energy®’s Priority 1 Team Is Always On-Call!

disaster relief help massachusettsBroco Energy® is certified for emergency response–including emergency fuel delivery–by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) as well as the Coast Guard. We are also contracted as the emergency fuel provider for the Massachusetts Energy Marketers Association (MEMA).

Taking advantage of partnerships that we have established throughout the country, our Priority 1 emergency-response team can be found on the scene wherever we’re needed, providing immediate emergency fuel deliveries until the trucks we’ve deployed arrive on site.

Qualified to respond to all levels of emergencies, our team is made up of experienced fuel-truck drivers and fuel-logistics coordinators. We can handle extreme weather events and other high-pressure situations, offering critical fuel support when it’s needed most.

Disaster relief means more than just oil trucks and supplies. Our response includes manpower and logistics coordinators who will send oil tanks, conduct remote monitoring and schedule emergency fuel service and deliveries as needed throughout the duration of the incident.

How We Started

In 2017, Broco Energy® was activated to assist and provide relief efforts for FEMA in Florida during Hurricanes Harvey and Irma. That was the beginning of our national Priority 1 emergency-response team.

We left from Boston with six oil tank trucks loaded with diesel and gasoline to provide fuel for priority facilities on a 24-hour basis. We stationed our trucks at local hospitals for generator refueling and at designated fueling points to assist the Urban Search & Rescue Task Force.

The following year, with Broco Energy® as the prime fuel contractor, the Priority 1 team supplied generators that provided much-needed heat to thousands of residents left without natural gas service after the multiple gas explosions that occurred in the Merrimack Valley.

We started by teaming up with fire departments on the scene, and then, once the incident was stabilized, we handled fixing the gas main.

That complex operation lasted from September into the winter. Broco Energy® provided fuel for more than 500 generators 24 hours a day for over three months, until new natural gas lines and equipment could be installed. For this incident, we had dedicated fuel-logistics coordinators who managed the fueling cycle of the generators on a daily basis.

These are but two examples and more occur with every passing year. Broco Energy® remains ready to respond to and assist any community hit by power outages after natural or manmade disasters with emergency fueling and Priority 1 delivery service–every day of the year.

Broco Energy®’s Priority 1 emergency-response team offers emergency response to anyone. If you have an immediate need, call our 24-hour disaster-response hotline at 781-246-1130.

propane for the home massachusettsIf you think propane gas is only for grilling, you’re missing out on one of the most versatile home fuels around.

Truth is, clean, green propane can be used to power just about any appliance inside or outside your Massachusetts or New Hampshire home. Here are some of the best residential uses for propane.

  1. Water heaters – High-efficiency propane water heaters cost up to 30 percent less to operate than electric heaters, with a recovery rate that’s nearly twice as fast. Bottom line: you’ll pay less for your hot water – and if you opt for a propane tankless water heater, you’ll have an endless supply of it on hand.
  2. Furnaces – Because propane burns much hotter and heats more efficiently than electricity, investing in a propane furnace can pay for itself in just a few years. Propane furnaces last longer, too – typically about 40 percent longer than electric heat pumps.
  3. Hearths – A propane gas fireplace gives you the beauty of a wood fire at the click of a button, with no set-up or clean up headaches. They’re also 5-6 times more efficient than wood burning fireplace, don’t create a dangerous buildup of creosote in your chimney, and don’t produce flying cinders that can pose a fire hazard.
  4. Ovens and cooktops – There’s a reason why 95 percent of professional chefs cook with gas rather than electric. With precision temperature control and more even heat distribution, nothing beats a propane cooktop or range.
  5. Outdoor cooking grills – Remember that precision temperature control? You can have it outdoors too if you choose a propane cooking grill. Portable and built-in outdoor propane gas grills start fast, cook evenly, and produce no charcoal residue, ash or harmful emissions.
  6. Outdoor living appliances – Your outdoor space isn’t just for grilling. Transform your backyard into your family’s favorite place to gather and relax by adding an outdoor propane fireplace or fire pit, a propane patio heater or even propane-powered lighting.
  7. Pool heaters – Add weeks to your outdoor swim season with a propane pool heater; electric or solar heaters can’t touch propane and its water heating power.
  8. Clothes dryers – Propane generates more heat than electricity, so a propane clothes dryer will take less time to dry a load of laundry and cost less money to operate.
  9. Backup generators – Severe weather is becoming more and more common, and the power outages they often bring can pose some big risks for your family. Backup propane generators can help keep your family safe and comfortable while you wait for power from the grid to return.
