As a former Navy SeaBee, Broco owner Bobby Brown applies the can-do attitude of his military training to every aspect of his business. This Memorial Day, we are sharing that with a local veteran. “It’s an honor to be able to serve veterans in our community, and this giveaway is just a small way that we can give back to someone who has given so much to our country,” Bobby said.

Throughout the month of May, nominate a veteran in your life to win a FREE YEAR of fuel, up to 750 gallons. The winner will be announced on Memorial Day. Here are the details:

A Meaningful Honor

Local fire captain and U.S. Navy Seabee veteran Bobby Brown runs the company with his wife, Angela. In 2019, Brown was named Veteran-Owned Small Business Owner of the Year by the Small Business Administration. biodiesel supplier massachusettsBroco Energy® and the rest of the heating-oil industry in the Northeast has committed to achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Bioheat® fuel is a big part of this effort, and we‘re proud to be delivering this clean, renewable fuel to you!

Every gallon of fuel we put in your tank is Bioheat fuel, a blend of biodiesel and ultra-low sulfur heating oil (ULSHO) This is more eco-friendly than conventional heating oil, which was already clean-burning.

Biodiesel is a gallon-for-gallon substitute for petroleum-based fuels, which have a higher carbon intensity. By 2030, it’s estimated that biodiesel will displace 529 million gallons of heating oil.

Biodiesel is a non-toxic, degradable renewable liquid fuel. The biofuel that’s blended with heating oil to create Bioheat fuel is generally produced by agricultural byproducts, including used cooking oil, animal fats, inedible corn oil, soybean oil and canola oil.

This puts excess oil and fats to good use. Food is never sacrificed for fuel in the production of Bioheat fuel. Bioheat fuel is also sourced and produced right here in the United States, REG Aimes Iowa supporting local farmers, local industries and local economies.

Understanding Blends

When a biodiesel blend (Bioheat fuel) is established, its name comes from the percentage of biodiesel it includes. For example, B5 is a blend containing 5% biodiesel, and B20 contains 20%. Bioheat fuel fully adheres to the health-effects testing requirements of the 1990 Clean Air Act Amendments, and Broco Energy® proudly offers blends of up to B100!

Reducing Your Carbon Footprint

Clean-burning and efficient, Bioheat fuel provides homes with a healthier environment. In addition to being efficient itself, Bioheat fuel adds to the life span of heating equipment and helps it run better. These added efficiencies result in lower heating costs for our customers.

In fact, Broco Energy® customers are always pleased to learn that Bioheat can be used on existing heating-oil systems—with no modifications! That means you can switch to this biodegradable, nontoxic fuel without altering or replacing your furnace or boiler—and the fuel even costs the same as the conventional heating oil that you’ve used in the past.

If you’re ready for an upgrade anyway, you’ll enjoy even more savings on your heating bills, as the most modern heating systems are incredibly efficient. Contact us if you would like to explore your options in new heating systems.

Our Bioheat Fuel Partner

We partner with Renewable Energy Group (REG), Inc. for our entire supply of renewable biodiesel so we can sell blended Bioheat® fuel to our customers. Their product is far superior to everyone else as far as quality goes.

REG is an international producer of cleaner fuels and North America’s largest producer of biodiesel. REG utilizes an integrated procurement, distribution and logistics network to operate 12 biorefineries in the U.S. and Europe. In 2020, REG produced 519 million gallons of cleaner fuel, delivering 4.2 million metric tons of carbon reduction. REG is meeting the growing global demand for lower-carbon fuels and helping Broco Energy® to do its part to assure a more sustainable future.

why bioheat new hampshireIf you use heating oil to heat your Massachusetts or New Hampshire home, chances are you’ve heard of Bioheat®Fuel. But how much do you really know about this revolutionary fuel and how differs from “conventional” heating oil?

Let’s take a look at some Bioheat basics.

Bioheat®101

Bioheat® is a blended fuel made by mixing ultra-low sulfur heating oil (ULSHO) with biodiesel – a renewable energy resource made in America from soy other vegetable oils, animal fats, recycled restaurant oils and other natural sources.  Typical blends range from two to twenty percent biodiesel per gallon (the blend percentage is indicated by the “B” number in the fuel name: B5 is five percent biodiesel, for example).

In most cases, Bioheat® can be used in conventional oil-fired heating systems without modification – in fact, if you’re a Broco Energy® customer, you’re already using it!

Cost Differences

The per-gallon difference in cost between Bioheat® and No. 2 heating oil is slim, with Bioheat® typically being pennies more per gallon or less. But price per gallon doesn’t tell the full story when it comes to long-term value: when you consider the total cost of the two fuels, Bioheat® comes out on top by a substantial margin. Why? Because Bioheat® burns cleaner, your equipment efficiency will improve, you won’t need as much maintenance, and your appliances will last longer.

Eco Benefits Of Bioheat®

If protecting the planet means a lot to you, you’re in luck: by using Bioheat®, you won’t just save wear and tear on your heating equipment, you’ll also shrink your carbon footprint.

That’s because every gallon of Bioheat® you use reduces airborne emissions compared to using other sources of home heating, including coal-generated electricity and conventional No. 2 heating oil. Here are six pollutants potentially produced by heating your home – and every one of them is reduced by using Bioheat® rather than other energy sources:

By extending the life of heating equipment, fewer furnaces and boilers will find their way into the landfill – another Bioheat® environmental benefit.

The Bottom Line With Bioheat®

As you can see, Bioheat® is a great choice for heating your home in an environmentally responsible way– so great, in fact, that residential Bioheat®® fuel-fired heating equipment is not even regulated under the Federal Clean Air Act.

Broco Energy®: Now the Official provider of

Biodiesel for Newton & Cambridge

cambridgeBroco Energy® has recently been awarded the City of Cambridge and the City of Newton’s biodiesel contracts. Cambridge and Newton are leaders in sustainability and have sustainability programs designed to promote the use of renewable fuels. These fuels, such as biodiesel, reduce their impact on the environment, improve energy efficiency, and raise the quality of life for residents.

Cambridge and Newton implemented a major climate protection plan which includes using biodiesel to power city-owned vehicles such as the DPW, Parks & Recreation, and Fire Departments. Broco Energy® will be fueling with B20 biodiesel fuel. B20 biodiesel runs cleaner, greener, and more efficiently than traditional diesel.

BioDiesel: What is it? Now, if you’re an average New Englander, you know what a diesel engine is, you know the basics of how it works, and you know it’s been around a while. Rudolf Diesel designed an engine that compresses fuel and air together and ignites it with a spark plug. Shortly after he realized that the engine would handle heavier fuel and run even better. That fuel is now widely known as the eponymous ‘diesel.’ However, the engine is capable of so much more, and so biodiesel evolves.

Biodiesel is an alternative fuel that can be produced from animal oil/fat, vegetable oil, and waste cooking oil. Rapeseed, palm, and soybean are all viable sources for this greener fuel. Biodiesel has zero aromatics so it reduces toxicity and burns cleaner. Biodiesel even reduces air pollution compared to petroleum diesel. Biodiesel use reduces carbon dioxide emissions by the absorption of carbon dioxide by the very plants, seeds, beans, etc that are used to produce the diesel in the first place. Biodiesel meets both the biomass-based diesel and the overall advanced biofuel requirement of the Renewable Fuel Standard. In fact, it is the first fuel commercially produced nationwide that meets the U.S. EPA’s definition of an Advanced Biofuel. Advanced biofuel is defined as a renewable fuel other than ethanol derived from cornstarch.

Broco Energy® takes sustainability very seriously. We are honored to be a part of this project and do our part to aid in reducing the overall carbon footprint!

Set Sail With Broco Oil: What is Marine Gasoil?

marine gasoil

Summer is here, and we’re ready to take to the open seas! Broco Oil is now providing marine fuel for commercial and residential boats. Your smaller personal boats are going to need off-road fuel. Commercial ships often use MGO or Marine Gasoil, but what exactly is MGO?

Whether its MGO for your larger commercial ship or off-road fuel for your smaller personal boat, we are here to serve!

So what is MGO? Marine Gasoil is a fuel composed of various blends of distillates. Distillates are the evaporated components of crude oil during the distilling process, that are condensed from gas state to liquid state. Marine Gasoil can be compared to diesel, but the difference is its higher density and storage requirements. MGO does not require heated storage. This saves cost and maintenance on ships already in use and installation on new ships.

MGO can hold a light or transparent color, but in certain circumstances is colorized yellow or red to easily detect usage of cheap heating oil in its stead. Marine Gasoil is a blend of distillates and small proportions of heavy fuel oil, giving it a low viscosity. This enables it to be easily pumped into the engine at a temperature of approximately 20 degrees Celsius.

Marine Gasoil continues to be a popular choice inside the shipping industry. Because of its lesser proportion of heavy fuel, it produces emissions with significantly less particulate matter and soot.

Marine Gasoil Broco Oil is here to service all of your marine oil needs. Whether its MGO for your larger commercial ship or off-road fuel for your smaller personal boat, we are here to serve! Broco is your one-stop-shop for fuel. We want to make sure that all your systems are running properly, so you can trust that everyone here has your best interest in mind. All of our technicians are ready to help and ready to keep you up and running all summer long!

How to Use a Generator for Emergency Backup

Commercial backup generators are specifically designed for industrial and commercial applications. For generators to convert energy into electricity, they use fuel. When a power outage occurs, the backup emergency generator rental will power on and begin to provide power.

Hurricanes and snowstorms can disrupt the power businesses need to operate fully. When this happens, having a commercial backup generator will provide welcome peace of mind for commercial property owners and businesses.

Fuel Types for Commercial Generators

Commercial backup generators use either gasoline, propane, natural gas, or diesel. There are pros and cons to each of these emergency fuel sources . While diesel fuel tends to be the most popular fuel for commercial backup generators because of its affordability, efficiency, and safety, natural gas is another popular choice.

Depending on the commercial backup generator’s primary use, it’s important to choose the right fuel source for your needs. When you need it the most, your choice of fuel sources will determine whether your generator will be able to run long enough to meet your needs.

General Usage and Safety Guidelines for Backup Generators

Always make sure you are following safety guidelines when operating a generator. Incorrectly operating a generator can cause harm and lead to dangerous situations:

generatorBackup generators should only be used when necessary, and only for powering essential equipment
